Following the Artist in America

The Art of Selling Art

Here's a survey I've created for all those involved in the arts to share their experience selling artwork. At the end of the survey, you can see the responses from others, to find out what other artists and those in the field are saying about selling.

The form gets cut off below, so you can simply go to this site

Still in search of participants

I'm still in search of participants for my documentary.

But, you ask, what have I been doing?

I've researched grants, cameras, accessories, and equipment. I'm feeling pretty confident about my choice in sound equipment and am researching how to acquire the right camera. Nothing is fancy and I'm in love! Simple, simple, simple. I guess more simply put I should only say it once: Simple.

I heart all things being achieved in one or two steps, and when filimg a doc the last thing I want is to make a spectacle of myself. I also don't want the participant to be aware that there is filming going on. Au natural! That is why I have been so deep in research, trying to figure out how to achieve this project with the least amount of crew and equipment.

My new best friend is the library. It ought to be in every edition of Time Out New York, especially in this economic crisis.

But, alas, I'm near ready to get my show on the road, and I'm short on artists. Where are you interesting folk? Struggling? At the top of your career? I want you alive in my little camera. Would you like to be a part of this project? I'll find ya!

Creative Folks...Call me!

I’ve narrowed down my focus and am moving ahead with the Artist idea - but rather than “Where is the American artist?” I've altered it slightly to "What does it mean to be an Artist in America today?" I threw the Artist topic on my list at the last minute. Then my friend (and fellow artist) John so awesomely pointed out how this is a smaller topic that can illuminate larger issues about the country. Will it be what I eventually develop? I'm not 100% sure yet. I'm still working through ideas. But thank you all for your responses!

Do I know artists living in America today? Yes, I do. But I want to see what’s out there and make sure that my final project covers the full spectrum. So I’m reaching out to you again. I’m starting my research today, speaking with artists of all specialties. You can recommend a dancer living in the Canadian border-town of Calais, Maine or a novelist with a view of Cuba in Key West, Florida. Don’t forget your friend, the painter, in Santa Fe, New Mexico and your cousin who is a lead singer performing at her local pub in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.

If you think they have a story to tell about surviving as an artist in America, then I’m curious.

Please feel free to post a comment below or contact me directly. Thank you and best wishes!

What Do You Want to See?

I'm getting on the road. I'll be taking a car, a camera, a microphone, and my hubby in order to discover America. Think of it as “Travels with Sony.” (I don’t have a dog, but I will have a digital camcorder.)

I'm currently in the planning stages and before I can finalize my route and my financial backing I need a concrete idea. It doesn't have to be dried concrete; I'm fine with fresh concrete, poured out and taped off, but still malleable enough for young lovers to scribble their initials inside an illustration of a heart. But there needs to be a focus.

I have a few ideas, all of which I'm excited about. So how do I decide? I want this project to be one I enjoy making, as well as am intrigued to watch. And what's a film without an audience? I would be most proud if other people were to enjoy watching it, too. So can you help me? Let me know which of the following doc' ideas interest you? If you have some ideas of your own, feel free to offer them.

My hope is to film the ins and outs of America, the good and the bad and the in-between. The overarching question: What does it really mean to live in America today? I want to film as many states as I can, holding up the camera like a mirror, the outcome a reflection of my fellow countryman/woman. In order to achieve my goal, I need a focus. I need a specific aspect to research and study.

Here are some ideas, in no particular order:

 What is ‘small town America’ and does it still exist?

 What is the role of ‘community’ in America today?

 What is the family in modern America? Is it still Father Knows Best? Is it more like Keeping Up with the Kardashians?

 Where is the American artist?
